A Virtual Singer takes the piss out of the EU!
UPDATE: A new version will soon be uploaded. YouTube’s automatic content identification filter made a mistake and we’re working on bypassing this mechanism. Apologies…
Well, after the world’s first (corporate/Japanese) “computer-generated Pop-Star” Eguchi Aimi (as reported by “Time” in June 2011) here is the… Anarcho-communist answer (OK, I am exaggerating -hehe- since this tehnology is available to anyone… willing to work hard enough):
So, who is this lady and (most importantly)… who is “actually singing”? – The short answer (to both questions) is “nobody”! The long answer is… hundreds of man-hours spent (using special software) to create the Virtual Singing you just heard (and it probably seemed quite human, to you, right?) :-) The virtual character was much easier to create than the music (which was written by hand, every little syllable of it, on top of every music symbol).
The song, “Hotel Europhrenia”, is (of course) my parody of “Hotel California“. Here are the lyrics (where “mutations” are in bold):
On a dark Euro highway, cool wind in my hair
hot news about Europe everywhere on the air
Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light
My head felt heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night
There she stood in the doorway
I heard protesters yell
And I was thinking to myself,
This could be Heaven or this could be Hell
Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way
There were riots in the city center
I thought I heard them say…
Welcome to the Hotel Europhrenia
Such a lovely place
Such an honest face
Plenty of room at the Hotel Europhrenia
Any time of year, you can find it here
Her mind is Goldman-Sachs-twisted
and she got some shares and bonds
She got a lot of pretty golden boys,
that she calls friends
How they dance in the courtyard,
sweet golden boy sweat
Some dance to remember,
some dance to forget
So I called up the bankster:
“Please bring me some cash”
and he said:
“We haven’t had that spirit here since nineteen ninety nine”
And still those voices are calling from far away,
Wake you up in the middle of the night
Just to hear them say:
Welcome to the Hotel Europhrenia
Such a lovely place, such an honest face
bailing out banks at the Hotel Europhrenia
What a nice surprise, for those bankster guys
terror on the ceiling, The economy on ice
And she said
“We are all just prisoners here, of our own device”
And in the Masters’ chambers
they gathered for their feast
Stabbing Greece with Austerity
But they just can’t kill the Greeks
Last thing I remember, I was
running for the door
I had to find the passage back to the currency we had before
“Relax,” said the bankster,
We are programmed to receive
take a bailout any time you like, but you can never leave
“Hotel California” has inspired many parodies. E.g. “Hotel Sarafina”by Jim Burges, “Hotel Academia” by Patricia L. Tenpenny “about being a psychology graduate”, and “Hotel Transylvania” by Ethan Mawyer. I found another list of similar parodies (some of them official song releases) in Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hotel_California_(song)#Parodies
Frequently Asked Questions (short list; a longer list may be posted later on…)
(this FAQ consists of real questions asked by friends and acquaintances outside the internet)
Question 1: Did a human singer sing the song?
Answer: No. Read carefully what was explained before…
Question 2: So, how was the video done?
Answer: Well, at the moment I am not willing to reveal the software tools I use. I am an officially registered user of some very important programs (and a non-registered user of several others), but I won’t mention them in public, since they are much too powerful politically, to make videos that influence people (much more than texts in blogs). You must be a… verifiable commie / anarchist / leftist and a trustworthy comrade, for me to disclose such information (and strictly in private).
Question 3: Why did you do all this in English?
Answer:Partly, because it was easier for me, to do so. When I find time (and inspiration) I might also add a Greek section (or Greek subtitles, etc). More importantly, this post’s topic is an international issue, even though it concerns Greece and the EU, (etc.). So, to do all this in Greek seems like… wasting time in less important things, or in… “preaching to the converted”!
Question 4: What’s the problem in the music accompanying the song?
Answer: Well, it was deliberately kept at very low volume, to emphasize the singing much more than the music (of a song that is well-known anyway). I am working on a full-blown trance remix of the song, but it needs more time (and it might not be accepted by YouTube’s stringent copyright rules). So, if I wait longer to get the remix done, it might become a problem rather than a solution: The video might have been banned in YouTube (as it happened to several other remixes of “Hotel California”).
Question 5: What’s wrong with making remixes, e.g. for “fair use”?
Answer: Nothing wrong! I am AGAINST copyright restrictions, anyway. However, I have to take care, when uploading videos and songs in sites that follow policies I strongly disagree with, or else I might not be able to upload important material. The situation is tense, with “ACTA“ and everything else… E.g. Read the Lady Gaga related article “The Lady Gaga / Weird Al Debacle and Fair Use Laws“.
