Trance Remix of “Ενα το Χελιδόνι”, a Mikis Theodorakis‘ song (“There is only one, single swallow” in English). This is my most recent, 11th remix of this particular song, done in February 2012. My first “Mikis Trance” remix of this song was approved and praised by Mikis Theodorakis (in person) back in 2006; even though it was much more primitive, from a music point of view.

• This new video presentation includes… semi-virtual dancing and other interesting… trickster-graphics.

INTRODUCTION

I do not expect these trance remixes to become popular in Greece, since they constitute “musical heresy“, here. This is also why I wrote this post in English, first (and ‘m not even sure if I’ll even bother to re-write it fully, in Greek). Nevertheless, Mikis Theodorakis genuinely liked this remix, while a lot of people in other countries like (and dance to) trance music; (many more elsewhere, than in Greece). As a result: -Consider this post to be a… malicious (or whatever) attempt to… export a Greek Cultural Product! And be-aware of Greeks with gifts (in remixing). 

In any case, my conscience is clean and my (sense of) “mission” is almost complete[*]:

• I have demonstrated practically (and visually, through this video’s dance show) that the music of Mikis Theodorakis can become authentic trance music, well-suited for MAINSTREAM dancing and clubbing; not just for official festivities (making most people yawn) or rallies and parades (after which the music goes back to the fringe, or the…fridge).

• As I had said, to Mikis Theodorakis (joking face-to-face) back in 2006 “We won’t get da youngsters outta da Club into Mikis-music, we’ll put Mikis-music into da Club”! 

• [*] “mission almost complete”: -All that remains is improvement and refinement (which never stops in remixing) as well as… promotion (which is beyond my restricted personal means).

HISTORY

Mikis Theodorakis was quite fond of the music ideas in these remixes, i.e. their “melodic and harmonic innovations”; not to mention the rhythm, which is badly needed for any song aspiring to become a dance-hit. Unexpectedly, Mikis was also very tolerant of my occasional music mistakes, since (in his own words, at the time) “mistakes can always be corrected“. He also liked (ad listened carefully to) many other remixes of his songs, that I  presented to him, at the time (2006 – 2007). He disagreed with his own secretary, as well as with some of his close friends, when he stated repeatedly that he genuinely liked my remixes. My reaction to his support was also (apart from gratitude) a growing sense of concern about the dogmatic “music opposition”:

• Some people feel such fanatical, quasi-religious devotion, to the music of Mikis Theodorakis, that they will never accept any other variation in style, than his own. For such people, I am (as a remixer)a kind of… evil demon, by definition. So, I asked Mikis Theodorakis if he could sign one of his e-mails, in printed form, turning the e-mail into a (much more formal and tangible) “letter of recommendation”. He didn’t hesitate to agree and sign it. immediately! A scanned picture of this letter is included, at 6:37 in this video [click here] after the music stops.

  The main reason I explain all this in detail, is because certain… extreme fans of Theodorakis’ music have sometimes expressed disgust (!) against my… music sacrileges, even though Mikis himself disagrees strongly with them and likes the remixes.

  Ah well, people who turned Mikis into a… religion, flocking together as blind music fans, need to discover that he does not like the job of… religious leader (being an agnostic, as he is, also helps -hehe).

Lyrics and Voices:

Odysseus Elytis

The late Odysseus Elytis wrote the Lyrics, which are a… headache for English translators. My own… attempt to translate them is here. Human voices used (occasionally) in this remix, include (the late) Grigoris Bithikotsis. However, I only used a restricted subset of the song’s original lyrics, since my main goal and motivation in these remixes, is for people to get up and dance, not just sing! (My own English translations of these restricted lyrics are included as video-subtitles).

CHARTS and PUBLICITY

This particular remix scored highly in the internet’s amateur music Top 50 Charts (which made me write some.. boastful,pompous little posts, at the time -hehe- e.g. THIS one HERE). However, it was ignored totally by all the mainstream media: TV, radio, music journals, official music charts, etc. Now… I will not discuss why it was ignored, since there are many valid reasons for this, at the sime time. One reason (but not the most important one, I.M.H.O.) is that these particular remixes needed improvements, e.g. in sound quality or mastering, or even in their constituent music elements: instruments, sound-textures, etc. However, songs are usually promoted in a way that might make you feel like an intruder in a sausage-factory, at the exact same moment when the sausages are being manufactured. And I don’t mean the music; -The promotion is the “sausage” (as well as the “industry’s goal”, whatever the song…)

‘Της Δικαιοσύνης Ηλιε Νοητέ’ (New Trance Remix of a Mikis Theodorakis song) 29/02/2012

Αυτό το remix δεν το κυκλοφόρησα μέχρι τώρα, εκτός από μικρά αποσπάσματα που έγιναν η μουσική επένδυση στο animation-video  ”Τροϊκανός Ηρως”. Ο τίτλος “της Δικαιοσύνης Ήλιε Νοητέ”  (που ειναι και ποίημα του Ελύτη) δεν μεταφράζεται εύκολα, λόγω του επιθέτου “νοητός” (θέμα που απασχόλησε παλαιότερη ανάρτηση). 

Η πρώτη έκδοση αυτού του remix (το 2006) άρεσε στον ίδιο τον Μίκη Θεοδωράκη, όπως και άλλα παρόμοια remix, για τα οποία ο ίδιος έγραψε και συστατική επιστολή (που παρατίθεται ΕΔΩ). Η σημερινή έκδοση (2012) έχει πολλές βελτιώσεις.

“The Internationale” Trance Remix for Dancing (industrial style) 19/11/2010

H “Διεθνής” σε χορευτική διασκευή (industrial trance remix) και dance performance:

Στο άλλο blog μου είχα αναφερθεί στη “Διεθνή”, αυτό τον ύμνο που τραγουδήθηκε σε όλο το φάσμα της αριστεράς, από σοσιαλιστές και κομμουνιστές μέχρι αναρχικούς. Στην ανάρτηση εκείνη παρατίθενται σε video πολλές εκδοχές και remixes αυτού  του ύμνου, με πρώτη υπερ-μεγέθη παρουσίαση την Ελληνική του “Εμπρός της Γης οι κολασμένοι…”:

• Η ΔΙΕΘΝΗΣ – The Internationale in Greek, English, French, with remixes (including… techno!)

Η “Διεθνής” είναι έργο δύο Γάλλων του 19ου αιώνα: Ο Eugène Pottier (1816–1887), μέλος της Κομμούνας του Παρισιού που… επέζησε τη σφαγή έγραψε τους στίχους. Ο Pierre De Geyter (1848–1932)  έκανε τη μελοποίηση μερικά χρόνια αργότερα, το 1888. Η διασκευή που θα ακούσετε είναι (χμ…) περίεργη. Δεν νομίζω ότι έγινε ποτέ κάτι παρόμοιο και σε μερικούς ίσως φανεί μέχρι και… ιεροσυλία! Ακόμη πιο περίεργος είναι ο χορός που αποδίδει τη διασκευή! Δείτε το βίντεο!…

Δεν πρόκειται για απλό remix. Χρειάστηκε και πάρα πολύ χρόνο, όχι μόνο για την ενορχήστρωση (με προσθήκες νέων συνοδευτικών μελωδιών, κλπ.) αλλά και για την επεξεργασία των ψηφιακών δειγμάτων ήχου που χρησιμοποιήθηκαν. Ψηφιακά δείγματα από πολλές χορωδίες (Γαλλική, Ρωσική, Ελληνική) που τραγούδησαν τον ύμνο έχουν ενσωματωθεί στο remix, αλλά μετά από μπόλικη τεχνική επεξεργασία. Π.χ. ανδρικές χορωδίες μετατράπηκαν ψηφιακά σε… γυναικείες ή παιδικές (χεχε) με ψηφιακό pitch-shifting και μετά έγινε μείξη των υψηλών τόνων στο αριστερό κανάλι με τους χαμηλούw τόνους στο δεξί, κ.ο.κ. Το χειρότερο ήταν η… ψηφιακή διόρθωση λαθών χρονισμού, που έγινε με το χέρι και χρειάστηκε πολλές ώρες και πολύ κόπο, διότι οι αρχικές χορωδίες δεν έψελναν με το σωστό ρυθμό κι έκαναν σοβαρά λάθη χρονισμού (που η χορευτική διασκευή με ρυθμό έφερε αναπόφευκτα στην επιφάνεια).

Για να παρουσιάσω το κομμάτι, έψαχνα για κάποιο είδος ταιριαστού χορού που ήδη υπάρχει δημόσια. Τελικά βρήκα μια εκπληκτική καταγραφή χορού στο διαδίκτυο (χωρίς απαγόρευση χρήσης – και είναι αυτή που βλέπετε) αλλά… μου βγήκε η πίστη όσον αφορά το ταίριασμα του (αρχικού) χορού με τη (δική μου) μουσική για την οποία (μουσική) δεν είχαν ιδέα όταν χόρευαν -φυσικά- κάτι… εντελώς διαφορετικό! Τέλος, Χμ… υπάρχει κι ένα μικρό προβληματάκι, με το συγκεκριμένο άτομο που ανέβασε εκείνο (το άλλο) video, που με έκανε να προβληματιστώ αρκετά για το ΑΝ θα έπρεπε να χρησιμοποιήσω το χορό εδώ. (ΟΧΙ θέμα “πνευματικών δικαιωμάτων” αλλά κάτι άλλο… πολύ διαφορετικό. Θα το εξηγήσω στα σχόλια, αν και… σήμερα ΔΕΝ έχω χρόνο, γιατί πρέπει να φύγω αμέσως μόλις κάνω αυτήν εδώ την ανάρτηση. ΔΕΝ προλαβαίνω και να προσθέσω τώρα και πολλά άλλα στοιχεία για τη “Διεθνή” – αν και υπάρχουν πολλά στην άλλη ανάρτηση, “Η ΔΙΕΘΝΗΣ – The Internationale in Greek, English, French, with remixes “).

NOTE: The amazing dance used in this video (after some… heavy editing to fit it with the music -hehe) is something I discovered in YouTube (here) …but I don’t know the dancers personally, nor did I have any contact with them (digitally or otherwise).

OXI άλλη Αποχή! (Greek Zombie Nation trance remix 2010) 14/11/2010

Η μουσική αυτού του video είναι remix του “Zombie Nation” (με Ελληνικό στίχο) και το θέμα του είναι η άρνηση (και σάτιρα) της αποχής στις εκλογές:

Λίγα λόγια για τη μουσική και τους στίχους:

1. Το remix αρχίζει -ουσιαστικά- στο σημείο 2:24 (2 λεπτά και 24 δευτερόλεπτα) στο βίντεο. Αυτό που ακούτε -περιστασιακά- πριν από αυτό το σημείο, είναι μόνο το ρεφρέν, που συνοδεύει τίτλους, κείμενα, αποσπάσματα δελτίου ειδήσεων (από το Mega) και ομιλίας του… Χίτλερ!

2. Το αρχικό κομμάτι (πριν τη διασκευή) είναι το “Zombie Nation” των “Kernkraft 400″. Περισσότερο βασίστηκα στην εκδοχή “Ohoho remix” και σε δικούς μου ήχους, καθώς και σε περιστασιακή χρήση ενός Ελληνικού speech synth, του “Δημοσθένη” – για ορισμένους στίχους (όσους δεν αποδίδω ο ίδιος) και τελική φωνητική επεξεργασία με Vocoder-type software.

3. Οι (χμμμ….) στίχοι είναι δικοί μου και επεκτείνονται, για το… επόμενο remix (του ίδιου κομματιού) μετά τις εκλογές:

Mikis Theodorakis trance remix: ‘θα σημάνουν οι καμπάνες’ 16/06/2010

Πάει πολύς καιρός τώρα… από το 2006, όταν συναντήθηκα για πρώτη φορά με το Μίκη Θεοδωράκη (στο σπίτι του) -μία συνάντηση που είχα επιδιώξει μέσω e-mail, για να του παρουσιάσω κάτι διασκευές (trance remixes) της μουσικής του. Η αντίδρασή του υπήρξε απίστευτα θετική και ενθαρρυντική, στο διάστημα που ακολούθησε. Αυτή η θετική στάση περιλαμβάνει και μία υπογεγραμμένη συστατική επιστολή του, προκειμένου να πείσουμε… κάποιους άλλους να βοηθήσουν σε αυτή τη δουλειά, η ολοκλήρωση της οποίας δυστυχώς -μέχρι στιγμής- αναβλήθηκε (ή πήγε χαμένη) λόγω διαφόρων δυσκολιών (π.χ. τη διάλυση της ορχήστρας του Μίκη, κλπ).  Ακολουθεί video νέας έκδοσης (2010) μιας από εκείνες τις διασκευές:

Παιδιά σηκωθείτε (Greek Crisis Trance Remix) -Μαρία Δημητριάδη: HD music video (1280*720). Διασκευή του παλιού αντάρτικου τραγουδιού που… χορεύεται κιόλας! Ο σκοπός τέτοιων διασκευών είναι κυρίως πολιτικός: Να περάσουν μηνύματα σε όσο το δυνατόν περισσότερα άτομα, μέσω “Viral Video“! Aκόμη περισσότερο, εφόσον μπορεί κανείς και να χορέψει αυτή τη διασκευή, ΟΧΙ μόνο να την ακούει σαν εμβατήριο (όπως το πρωτότυπο τραγούδι), οπότε… μπορεί να διαδοθεί μέσα από πάρτυ, ή κλαμπάκια! (θα επανέλθω…)

Η… φυλή των “ΕΛ” απήγαγε τη μουσική μου, στο YouTube! 16/11/2008

Πριν λίγο καιρό, διαπίστωσα ότι ένα μουσικό κομμάτι μου χρησιμοποιήθηκε σαν ηχητική επένδυση για ένα… ακραίο video της κατηγορίας “όλοι εμείς οι ΕΛ-ληνες είμαστε εξωγήϊνοι, από τον αστερισμό της Ανδρομέδας”! Δεν κάνω πλάκα, έτσι ακριβώς συνέβη, ενώ (μα τη… Θεά) δεν έχω προσωπικά την παραμικρή ευθύνη, για το γεγονός ότι ένα μουσικό κομμάτι “επικού trance” (που έφτιαξα το 2007) άρεσε σε μερικούς… ΕΛ-ληνες! UPDATE: Η μουσική στο κομμάτι άλλαξε, γιατί ο άνθρωπος που έφτιαξε το βίντεο ένιωσε προσβεβλημένος, απο αυτή την ανάρτηση και ξήλωσε αργότερα τη μουσική, βάζοντας στη θέση της το ένα από τα δύο κομμάτια που αποτέλεσαν την έμπνευση για το δικό μου remix.

Depeche Mode’s “Enjoy the Silence” (A selection of cool Youtube music videos and trance remixes) 01/02/2008

Depeche Mode’s “Enjoy the Silence” is a song to be eternally remembered. It was a huge success in its own time and it remains one of the best songs, ever. About this song, a proliferation of remixes emerged, by both amateur and professional musicians throughout the world. In this post, Youtube videos of “Enjoy the silence” are presented, ranging from a video-clip of the original song, to a variety of (sometimes strange) trance remixes.-So, why do I write all this?

• I feel intrigued by the magnificent harmonic and melodic structure of this song, closely related to the “music DNA” of many other songs. Some of these have been directly derived -or copied- from “Enjoy the Silence”. Many other songs are (more-or-less) similar, but not identical to it. So, in my quest for a deeper structure of harmonic semantics in modern music, this song seems to contain strong elements of a ubiquitous latent musical structure, that I coined “Atlantean Harmony”, vaguely and… rather amateurishly described in a controversial web-page here.
• It seems a challenging puzzle: Unravelling this song’s “Music DNA” is on the top of my music priorities list.

Here is a newer, enhanced but authentic Depeche Mode version of 2006:

John Digweed‘s trance remix of “Enjoy the silence” is -I think- the most interesting, although (for the most part) it is also the most… boring: Although it’s dated (from the days when grossly repetitious trance was still enjoyable as MainStream music), John Digweed’s remix captures and reveals the chord structure of the song in the most elegant way. Mikis (Theodorakis) Trance becomes Number 25 in the international Top 100 Chart of Soundclick.com 19/01/2008

First released in June 2007, this WAS a short 3-minute sample of my Trance Remixes of Mikis Theodorakis.

It had already become Number 43 in the Top 100 Trance Chart of “Soundclick Music” (among 25000 other songs, at that time).

Unbelievable as it seems, my Trance remix sample of Mikis Theodorakis’ music is still Number 1 in the top 100 Soundclick.com chart of Greek Trance music, 6 months after it first reached this position in June 2007 -see the post here.

There have been too many delays, as regards finishing my other trance remixes of Mikis Theodorakis’ music, I have to admit it: Partly, the delays were caused by other serious obligations (e.g. A.I. software development). Also, they were partly due to… excessive blogging! Finally, there have been some additional difficulties, as regards contacting the “Mikis Theodorakis” orchestra, because of the Orchestra’s other priorities, in music projects all over Greece (and cooperation with the Mikis Theodorakis orchestra is vital for this work).

Το φεστιβάλ Ηλεκτρονικής Μουσικής στην Κω (τον Αύγουστο του 2007) ματαιώθηκε (και οι λόγοι γι’ αυτό αναλύονται πιο κάτω) αλλά η μουσική του Μίκη Θεοδωράκη (σε δικά μου trance remixes) αποθεώθηκε σε τριήμερο πάρτυ, που αντικατάστησε το φεστιβάλ:

Open Air Electronic Music Festival (“Knights of Kos”) 10 – 15 August 2007: Kos island, Greece 10/08/2007

The “Open Air Electronic Music Festival”, is opening today in Kos island, Greece, in “Dolphin Bay”, Mastichari area (North coast of Kos), for six days (and nights) of House, Electro and Trance music, organized by the Athens U.N.I.T. Club (United Nations in Trance).

Some of my own Trance remixes (of Mikis Theodorakis) will be played in this festival. DJ’s from other places in Europe (including Greece) are also taking part.
