UPDATE 1: Now some serious news (as opposed to humourous science-fiction / wild speculation). In an international forum’s thread  “Athens Burns“ someone commented about the events in Greece as follows:

These guys seriously know how to riot, much respect, apart from the hoodies (HOOLIGANS) destroying non-governmental things.

Far from being short-term “student unrest”, the young generation’s nationwide uprising in Greece is a process of awesome, overwhelming complexity. There are many reasons for it (in addition to the outrageous murder of young Alexandros Grigoropoulos); social, economic, political, etc.

• But is this… all there is to it?

Well, undoubtedly, attributing the revolt to such causes  is correct; the outrageous Police Criminality that killed Alexandros is also -beyond doubt- enough to cause the (so-called) riots almost by itself...

However, perhaps there is also something more; something completely different, lurking  inside those young people’s minds, eluding their conscious awareness:

Εεε… Ο ίδιος άνθρωπος θεωρεί πως ΜΟΝΟ οι Βλάχοι (Βλαχόφωνοι) Έλληνες είναι ΟΙ “αυθεντικοί” (με… Ορίτζιναλ Γκρηκ DNA), ενώ σχεδόν όλοι οι άλλοι Έλληνες (π.χ. νοτίως της Πίνδου, Αρκάδες, κλπ) είναι ΑΡΑΠΑΔΕΣ!

GUILT BY ASSOCIATION is a known Logic Fallacy in politics, etc.

Some syllogistic examples of guilt by association are:

• Hitler was a vegetarian. Hitler was pure evil. Therefore, vegetarians have evil ideals.

• Mr. Soros finances the ACLU, YOU finance the ACLU. Therefore, YOU are ( a supporter / lackey / lover of- ) Mr. Soros.

Greek Joke (expressing this fallacy):

• Policemen are instruments, Buzukis are instruments. Therefore, Policemen are Buzukis.
  

Honour by association:

The logical inverse of “guilt by association” is honor by association, where one claims that…

someone or something must be reputable because of the people or organizations that are related to it or otherwise support it.

EXAMPLES:

• Alice is a lawyer, and Alice thinks highly of Bob. Therefore, Bob must know the law.

• Chris is a politician, and Chris thinks highly of Mr. Tsapanos. Therefore Mr. Tsapanos knows politics.

• Aaron will make a good race car driver, because his friend is a good race car driver.

• Citizens of GREECE have won more EUROVISION / NOBEL prizes/gold medals/literary awards (etc) than citizens of BULGARIA. Therefore, a citizen of GREECE is superior to a citizen of BULGARIA (CLICK to see the related post: “For me… ICELAND is the BEST in Eurovision 2008″)

Logic Form:

In notation of First-order logic, this type of fallacy can be expressed as

(∃x∈S:φ(x))→ (∀x∈S:φ(x)),

meaning: “if there exists any x in the set S so that a property φ is true for x, then for all x in S the property φ must be true.”

Premise: A particular thing A is a B

Premise: A is also a C

Conclusion: Therefore, all Bs are Cs

Well, narrow-mindedness in Greece can sometimes be so monstrous, that it can also be utterly self-defeating:

People all over the world are now laughing their heads off about the recent NEW international “Greek naming dispute“: All this preposterous global stirrup was generated by certain irrational hard-headed inhabitants of Lesbos island in Greece, demanding (legally as well) that… (female gay) Lesbians should be denied the right of using the word “Lesbian”, since it’s alleged to be a “copyrighted” Greek word, belonging only to the inhabitants of Lesbos!

• Wow, maaan… AFTER THIS, nobody is likely to take seriously, any more, ANY other Greek “naming dispute” with anyone else (e.g. F.Y.R. Macedonia)!
  
• However, a compromise solution between FYROM and Greece, based on a composite name for F.Y.R.Macedonia is actually a very reasonable idea, as I explained in other blog-posts: There are serious drawbacks in an unqualified name “Macedonia”, for a small country which is only a small part of GEOGRAPHIC Macedonia. O.T.O.H. a compromise solution is NOT liked by fanatic Greeks and fanatic Slav Macedonians, alike.

However, a SIMPLE SOLUTION to the “problem” of these hard-headed inhabitants of Lesbos has probably eluded everybody:

• ALL we have to do, as a country wishing to avoid… bad impressions every time the name “Lesbian” is confused with the local geographic identical term, is to RENAME the Greek island “LesVos” (with a V), also demanding that everyone else in the world uses the terms “LesVians” and “LesVos” instead of “Lesbians” and “Lesbos”.

SO SIMPLE, but SO DIFFICULT TO SEE, isn’t it?

• Lesvos, not Lesbos. Lesvians, not Lesbians!

• NOTE: Not many people are aware of the fact that the Greek island of Lesbos has also enjoyed immense benefits in TOURISM, due to the historical connection between Lesbians and the world’s “first famous Lesbian”, Sappho! In fact, every summer in Lesbos, an annual General Meeting of International Lesbian (gay) women is being held.

• As a result, “Women-only” tourist events in Lesbos have been quite common:

Α PERSONAL STORY: Many years ago, while on holiday in Mytilene (another name for Lesbos) I met a wonderful sensual woman from Austria, who turned out to be exclusively Lesbian, in fact -much to my dissapointment! However, we got to know each other rather well, afterwards, remaining “just friends”.

We ended up dancing non-stop every night, while during daytime I would sit on the back seat of her heavy-duty motorbike, and we would then both go to Petra Beach and other areas of Lesbos, densely populated by female tourists, in order to… make passes (traditional “KAMAKI”) at women!

• Oh yes! Her name was Gabrielle Shechang, although I’m not sure about her surname’s spelling. She said she is a writer and a cartoonist, as well as a Lesbian top-activist.

• I state this officially, since I AM LOOKING FOR HER, all these years…
• Google searches I made, and other kinds of search, NEVER produced any results, although Gabrielle must be very well known in Austria, in Gay and Lesbian political circles.

We forgot to exchange addresses, except on the very last day, when I lost her in the harbour: She got on the boat, and our AGREEMENT that she would publish (in her Austrian Lesbians’ magazine) some articles I had written, was consequently not kept.

• However, Ms. Gabrielle Shetshang told me that I was probably one of the very very few Greek heterosexual non-sexist men, whose views her Lesbian magazine would GLADLY publish, since my ideas were perfectly compatible with their viewpoints! So:
  

Dear Ms. GABRIELLE SHETCHANG,

This is GEORGE ! We met in Lesbos, in the late eighties.

WHERE ARE YOU? Hi !

The reason she and I became friends very soon was (apart from my “heterosexual non-sexism”) the fact that I exclaimed to her, as soon as she told me she “preferred women”:

If you’re Lesbian it’s GREAT! You and I have something IN COMMON:

• We BOTH prefer women!

• This post was inspired by a friend, the Greek blogger HarisHeiz (crazycows.wordpress.com) who posted detailed explanations of his own avatar and blog-banner here, while his friend Manos documented his own avatar here (quite humourously). Of course, my banner and avatar are far from perfect; so, feel free to criticize or contribute your own ideas about them!

A minimal tribute to the “impiteous Tata Sisters” 15/12/2007

The existence of extremely popular Greek bloggers who are also… extremely filthy, tacky, full of gossip, slander and all kinds of excrement, has caused the appearance of antidote-blogs, often misconstrued as “hate-blogs”. Usually, they are not hate-blogs: On the contrary, they are heroic activists against the filth of certain other blogs (usually not readily detectable)!

E.g. there exists an unusual blog, full of vitality, honesty and strong language (wherever necessary): The “Impiteous Tata Sisters blog” (of “minimal situationism“). I had a good laugh, reading what the Tata Sisters come up with, from time to time; agreeing with them most of the time! Unfortunately, it’s a Greek-speaking blog. However, it’s worth reading if you can understand Greek and if your mind is open ; you can also try automatic translations of this blog’s posts in English (quite ghastly in translation errors sometimes, but sometimes also even funnier, as “Automatic Translation Babel-Pigeon English”). From now on, I decided to include this militant, straight-talking “Tata Sisters Blog” in my blogroll. I also created for it a convenient mini-banner for easy reference (and free promotion through my own blog):

Ως υποψήφιος βουλευτής των ΠΠΠ αδυνατώ -βεβαίως- να δεχτώ τα σχόλιά σας, αν δεν τα κρίνω ταιριαστά στον προσωπικό (κομματικό) μπλογκο-χώρο Μου. Δεν έγινα -άλλωστε- υποψήφιος βουλευτής για να σώσω… εσάς (τα μιάσματα), αλλά επειδή είναι γούστο Μου, καπέλο Μου και… καύλα Μου. Επομένως, γράψτε ότι θέλετε, αλλά μην περιμένετε και να… σωθεί αυτό που γράφετε. Κάντε το copy-paste στο notepad πριν το στείλετε, για να μη το χάσετε, αφού ΕΓΩ επιλέγω (πριν από σας, για σας) ΤΙ θα σχολιάσετε. Αν χάσετε τα λόγια σας ή τα κείμενά σας, είστε οι μόνοι αποκλειστικά υπεύθυνοι για το γεγονός ότι ΕΓΩ σας τα εξαφανίζω, ΟΠΟΤΕ γουστάρω!
