Immigrants tortured in central Athens Police-station (video)

Omonia Square, located in the heart of the city, is regarded as the transportation center of Athens.Image via Wikipedia

As a Greek (formerly UK resident) I feel very concerned about continued violence and torture in Greek police stations. If you visit Greece and you are of Asian origin, beware of Omonia Square Police Station. Above all, don’t hang around there, in Athens centre, without your… passport!

UPDATE (19-6-2007) : The infamous Omonia Square Police Station has been revealled (in the last few days) to be a shameless Torture centre for immigrants, in the middle of Athens. See the end of this article for more details.

  • Through occasional articles like this, I hope to make small contributions towards the… democratisation of Greece.
  • If some Greek people think that police violence is «ok for some prisoners», they should also consider the severe damage caused by this violence, to the international reputation of Greece as a whole.

Well, here is a recent «YouTube» video-clip of two Asian (presumably illegal immigrant) prisoners, tortured and humiliated by Greek policemen in Omonia Police station…

The two Greek cops seem to have great fun, forcing their prisoners to… slap each other as hard as possible, taking turns:

I first saw this shocking video in the blog of a popular open-minded Greek blogger, «Allu Fan Marx». The video also circulated around many other Greek blogs and on Greek Television (which I… do not watch, personally). The Greek minister of Justice Mr. Polydoras was cornered by TV journalists to defend himself about this event (which he condemned but… refused to take any responsibility). The Greek prime-minister also denounced it; Words, words, words… to no avail, since this particular police station (in Omonia Square) is infamous, for a number of years, about the use of torture and violence towards prisoners (especially illegal immigrants of Asian origin).

E.g. One prisoner, held in custody and beaten up quite severely last year (November 2006) … died in his home the day after his release. If you can read Greek, take a look at this document (about the death of that immigrant after being tortured by the Greek police at Omonia Station).

In the end of this article there is a shocking announcement from the previous link (to save you the trouble of scrolling down the page to find it).

Meanwhile, several official reports about the infamous Omonia Square Police station (e.g. by the Council of Europe commission and by Amnesty International) lead to the unavoidable sad conclusion that this police station is in fact a kind of semi-official Torture Centre for illegal immigrants. In the words of a report by the (impartial) «Council of Europe commission» (see the link HERE), the following bone-chilling account of conclusively proved evidence of real torture is included:

A third person alleged he was beaten during an interrogation in the juvenile department on the 3rd floor by three male officers and a woman four days prior to the delegation’s visit. He alleged that he was spat on, kicked in the genitals, slapped, punched and hit with a broom handle and a book on his head, upper body and buttocks. Upon examination by a medical member of the delegation he had pain in both shoulders, a violet-green bruise on the left eyelid; a blue-violet-greenish bruise on both buttocks (5 cm x 6 cm on left and 7 cm x 6 cm on right), with one darker elongated trace inside; he complained of earache, with a wind-like sound in his ear and an inability to hear. The condition of his left ar pointed to a rupture of the tympanic membrane, possibly caused by a severe blow to the ear.

At Omonia police station one person alleged he was punched and beaten on his back, chest, arms and legs with batons by several policemen both upon arrest and in the police station, during the night prior to the delegation’s visit. A medical member of the delegation observed inter alia thin parallel linear reddish marks (up to 3 cm in length) on the front and lateral sides of the neck; a reddish-blue bruise (4 cm x 1 cm) on the chest, above the right mammilla; a reddish-blue bruise (3 cm x 1 cm), on the left shoulder; two parallel linear bruises, reddish-blue in colour (5 cm x 1 cm) in the middle of the under side of the right upper arm; two reddish-blue bruises (on the right side 3 cm in diameter and on the left side 6 cm x 2 cm) on the back, in the area around the shoulder blades; two parallel linear bruises of reddish-blue colour (5 cm x 1 cm) in the middle of the front and on the side of the upper right leg, as well as on the upper left leg.

Another person alleged he was beaten with batons and punched during the night prior to the delegation’s visit. Upon examination by a medical member of the delegation he displayed a blue bruise on his left eyelid and scleral haemorrhage on his right eye; a blue bruise (3 cm x 1 cm) in the region of the left cheek-bone; swelling of the left side of the chin; several parallel linear reddish marks (up to 3 cm in length) on the left and front side of the neck; a few smaller blue bruises on the left shoulder and on the left part of the back; two parallel linear bruises of reddish-blue colour (5 cm x 1 cm) on the front side of the upper left leg, as well as on the same part of the right leg.

Finally, here is the extract of the Greek text reporting the death of an immigrant following a night of extremely fierce torture at Omonia Police Station:
